2006 - Southern Beauty
Southern Beauty was made for the Lakeview Quilter’s Guild Mayfest 2006 Quilt Show. It's an interpretation of the show theme, “Life's a Trip.” Based on the traditional "New York Beauty" block and sashing, this beautiful and extremely challenging quilt has been brought to Texas and converted to a "Southern Beauty."
The quilt measures 71" x 92” and incorporates machine piecing and machine quilting. The design was drafted by Sue Garman, based on an antique quilt made by a 17-year old in Pennsylvania in 1874. The quilt adopts the colors used in the original old quilt, with a variety of reproduction black prints set amidst white and off-white shirtings, along with a mix of other colorful, scrappy pieces. The quilt contains 2,965 pieces. The quilt was pieced by Cynthia Clark, Jean Cloyd, Jerryann Corbin, Pat Cotter, Jerrianne Evans, Sue Garman, Denise Green, Elaine Haycraft, Sharon Meyer, Nancy Pocklington, and Georgann Wrinkle.
Sue Garman and Denise Green quilted the top on long arm machines. The quilt is stitched in the ditch along all seam lines, with a feathered design stitched in the open areas. The backing fabric is a black and white toile in keeping with the reproduction fabric used on the quilt top.
2004 - Patriotic Beauty
This donation quilt was made for the Lakeview Quilter’s Guild Mayfest 2004 Quilt Show. It's an interpretation of the show theme, “United We Quilt”.
The quilt measures 70" x 80” and incorporates machine piecing and hand appliqué.
The design was conceived by Elsa Tutt, drawing on Elly Sienkiewicz’s patterns to create a Baltimore album style quilt with a patriotic feel. The quilt features include medallion layout featuring a large feathered star with a patriotic eagle appliqué in the center. Four appliqués of traditional symbols for Love, Honor, Friendship, and Unity adorn the corners of the center star. The quilt border incorporates the pieced and appliqué elements from the center of the quilt. A final symbol of Hope, a gold bow, adorns the top left corner.
In keeping with the quilt style, reproduction fabrics in traditional red, blue, green and gold were used. Sew Contempo, a local fabric shop, donated all fabrics for the quilt. Jean Cloyd, Jerrianne Evans, Trudie Davis, Marsha Fuller, Denise Green, Rimy Guerra, Mira Noble, Elsa Tutt, and Emily Venski completed all hand appliqué. Donna Warnement from That Quilter professionally quilted the top on a long arm machine. The quilting is a heavy stippling that enhances the appliqué. The backing fabric is a red and tan toile with Americana images in keeping with the patriotic theme.
